Disney Nature

The new documentary will be debuting on Earth Day, April 22.  It follows three animal families and looks really cute!

A Snowy April Day!

A Snowy Day in AprilI couldn’t believe it when I woke up this morning and saw what is was doing!  Yikes, it is April 7th, isn’t it?  I guess mother nature just wanted to give us one last taste (I am crossing my fingers) of winter.

It has been a long winter, but I have been staying quite busy learning more information about our green home efforts.  I have actually started a new blog dedicated to greening adoptions and post daily there.  You can check it out at :  www.greenadoptions.com

I have also begun to start a new hobby making paper!  I am very anxious to design some new cards and offer my recycled paper to others soon.  I will probably open a shop on Etsy, so I will let you know when that happens!

I am looking forward to EARTH DAY coming up and we plan to attend as many events as we can.  Oh, and in a few weeks, we will be leaving for a MUCH NEEDED family vacation to the Bahamas.  I am really looking forward to that and can’t wait to take some great photos and be by the sea!  It can’t come fast enough!

Pot Maker

potmakerYesterday at The Motherhood I participated in a call with Burpee.com  We learned about starting your garden along with some great tips and advice.  I decided to visit their site today to start planning out my garden and came across this cute POT MAKER!  Now, this is a great little device for starting your seedlings with newspaper and then planting them right into the ground! It’s biodegradable, helps you recycle your newspapers and eliminates the need to purchase trays.  How eco-friendly and organic is that??  It sells for $18.95.

The 12 Most Contaminated Fruits & Veggies!

fruitsveggiesRecently, I have been doing alot of research regarding food and the harmful pesticides in our produce.  The Environmental Working Group is a great resource for learning about scientfic studies that expose us to harmful threats regarding our health and the environment.  There is still much research that needs to be completed regarding pesticides and that is one of the reasons why we should be concerned.  According to the EWG, the 12 most contaminated fruits and veggies will expose a person to about 14 pesticides a day!  YIKES!!  That is astounding to me.

 The Dirty Dozen includes:

  1. Peaches
  2. Apples
  3. Sweet Bell Peppers
  4. Celery
  5. Nectarines
  6. Strawberries
  7. Cherries
  8. Lettuce
  9. Grapes (Imported)
  10. Pears
  11. Spinach
  12. Potatoes

On the flip side, the EWG also lists the Cleaniest 12 as follows:

  1. Onions
  2. Avocado
  3. Sweet Corn (Frozen)
  4. Pineapples
  5. Mango
  6. Sweet Peas (Frozen)
  7. Asparagus
  8. Kiwi
  9. Bananas
  10. Cabbage
  11. Broccoli
  12. Eggplant

So, just what are you to do if one of your favorite fruits or veggies in on the Dirty Dozen list?  The best option is to eat a well varied diet, wash all produce (this does not eliminate all pesticides, but may help reduce levels), and choose organic when you can to reduce your exposure to harmful chemicals.  I would love to hear from you if one of your favorites are on the list.  I was quite disappointed as most of mine were!

Stopping Junk Mail Mania!

My Junk Mail About once a week I receive a bunch of circulars from grocery stores and other shops.  Everytime I get them I can’t stand it because it is such a WASTE!  I receive SO MUCH junk mail daily and I knew there were several companies out there that could help me get the JUNK MAIL STOPPED and this is what I found:

Green Dimes - For $20 a year they will stop about 90% of your junk mail in about 90 days.  Not too bad.  They will also plant 5 trees on your behalf.  As of today, their statistics look pretty impressive:  341,263 people helped, 1,355,222 TREES PLANTED, 2,786,094 catalogs stopped and 18,257,007 POUNDS of junk mail stopped!junkmail

41 Pounds - It cost $41 for FIVE years of service!  Averaging only two cents a day!  More than 1/3 of your fee goes to the environmental or community group you choose from their list.  The average adult receives 41 pounds of junk mail each year.  41 Pounds stops 80-95% of unwanted catalogs and junk mail.

STOP all those unnecessary catalogs in your mailbox by joining Catalog Choice.  It’s a FREE service that lets you choose which catalogs you would really like to receive.  So far, they have  1,100,163 people that have signed up!

I am sure there are more companies that exist out there, so if you have any you would like to share, please drop us a line.  I think we will be signing up with 41 pounds!

The GREEN NFL

helmet2Here we go Steelers, Here we go!  Today, we will watch our Pittsburgh Steelers WIN Superbowl XLIII!  We are sooooo excited and pumped up for the game.  I couldn’t help but wonder if the NFL had any type of environmental program and so I did a little research and I am happy to report that YES they do!   The NFL Environmental Program evaluates the environmental impacts of Super Bowl activities and then will work with the local community to develop and implement cost-effective and sustainable projects to address them.  So, just what will the NFL be doing to help eliminate their footprint in Tampa?  Here are the results:

1.  Unserved, prepared food from NFL-related parties will be donated to local food banks

2.  Solid waste recycling throughout the Super Bowl footprint

3.  Sports equipment collections by area schools

4.  A material donation program which donates décor, office supplies, construction materials and other items used during Super Bowl to local non-profit agencies

5.  Renewable energy used at major event venues

6.  Tree planting as an offset to the additional greenhouses gas created by Super Bowl-related activities

If you are hosting a SuperBowl party today, please remember to eliminate as much waste as possible, recycle and think green during your celebration!  GO STEELERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Economy Hurts Our Recycling Program!

063Wow!  I never thought about how the economy could actually have an impact on our local recycling program.  As of January 31, we will no longer have the curb side recycling program.  :-(   I was just getting really used to throwing a lot of the recyclables in one bin and now I will have to re-organize my system.  It seems that we will still be able to recycle, just not everything in one bin.  And, we will have to take newspapers and shreddings to a Paper Retriever in our area, which is really no big deal, but then again, when you think about how you probably have to DRIVE there to recycle, it really is a no-win situation.  But my solution is to send all my newspapers and shreddings to school with my son because there is, indeed, a Paper Retriever at his school – YEAH!  If you would like to find out if you have a Paper Retriever in your neighborhood, visit their website at www.paperretriever.com

Oink Oink!

piggy-paintPiggy Paint is in the house!  We received our order today and Chloe was so excited she was running around the house like it was Christmas.  I had to drop everything to paint her nails right away!  We can’t say enough about how great this product is.  We LOVE it!  It goes on very nice, dries in a second and has no smell – you can’t beat that.  I would highly recommend it to anyone who has a princess like mine!  Thanks Piggy Paint for a great product!
